Two items: official M.C.C. team sheet, signed in full by the manager and each member of the 16-strong tour party, alongside the printed names; South African signatures of the twelve chosen for the Port Elizabeth 5th test, on the letterhead of the King Edward Hotel.  The M.C.C. signatures are those of May, Insole, Bailey, Compton, Cowdrey, Evans, Laker, Loader, Lock, Oakman, Parks, Richardson, Statham, Taylor, Tyson, Wardle, and the manager Brown.  The South African signatures are those of Van Ryneveld, Pithey, McLean, Heine, Goddard, Adcock, Endean, Funston, Waite, Duckworth, Tayfield, and Varnals.  Each sheet:  250 x 200 mm; horizontal and vertical folds.  Slightest creasing and a few fox spots.  Very good condition.  "Port Elizabeth had imported soil from Durban to prepare a pitch only three months previously and it was thought that this was insufficient time to prepare a Test wicket.  South Africa again won the toss and elected to bat.  The pitch was dead but the ball kept low at one end, giving the fast bowlers a great advantage.  Statham, however, was unavailable and Wardle required treatment for his cartilage.  Five South African wickets fell for 78 and then Endean, together with McLean and Van Ryneveld, managed to bring the total to 164, a satisfactory one under the circumstances.  Adcock took the wickets of Richardson and Compton for ducks, but May managed 24.  Bailey came out and hit the ball hard, playing one of the best innings of his career for 41, but England could score only 110.  The third day's play was the slowest in Test history with only 122 runs being scored.  Goddard took a blow on the chin, retired and then came back to score 30, while to add to the injuries Compton had fallen in the hotel and hurt his back.  Tayfield had knee trouble and Waite tore a muscle in his shoulder while diving in the field.  Tyson bowled off a shortened run and took six wickets for 40, but South Africa managed to score 134, a lead of 188.  Bailey and May stayed for a time but Tayfield took six for 78 and South Africa won a controversial match by 58 runs and squared the series two-all." - Ray Knowles: South Africa Versus England - A Test Cricket History, p. 148.
