This lot consists primarily of correspondence between Sir Herbert Baker and AT Babbs (1870 - 1953) a Quantity Surveyor.

AT Babbs was invited to South Africa from London by Baker for the purpose of acting as Quantity Surveyor for several building projects, including the restoration of Groote Schuur (Now the residence of the Prime Minister), Rhodes Memorial, the buildings of the University of Cape Town and other projects. Babbs was very active in church matters and was a past president of the YMCA and a trustee of the Ladies Christian Home for over 40 years.

The correspondence dates between 1898 and 1944. The latter being one of the last letters Baker wrote before his death. There are 24 items in all including, letters, telegrams and a signed 12 page "Deed of Partnership Agreement" between Herbert Baker, FK Kendall and J Morris which was signed by Baker in Deli in 1916.

There are two books included in the lot. THE RESTORATION OF GROOT CONSTANTIA By FK Kendall which is inscribe and signed by Kendall to Babbs dated 1927. The book is a first edition with some marks to the boards and a small tear to the upper spine, otherwise a good clean copy. There is also a near mint copy of HERBERT BAKER ARCHITECTURE AND IDEALISM 1892-1913 The South African Years. By Michel Keath.
