viii, 124 pages, [7] leaves of plates: illustrations (1 on front endpapers), frontispiece, map. Cloth, faded on spine. Name on half title page.
The story of the shipwreck of the Dunedin Star (not named in this, the first edition due to wartime restrictions, but named in post-1945 editions) and the subsequent ill-fated attempts to rescue survivors, by ship, tug and aeroplane before, finally, a successful overland expedition. Marsh was a successful journalist and shipping reporter and interviewed both survivors and rescuers to obtain first hand accounts. The remnants of the rescue mission can still be visited in Namibia. The first edition is seldom seen, and this binding is unusually tight and the cloth clean.
