First edition: 268 pages, frontispiece, 5 plates, original red pebble grained cloth decorated in black on the upper cover and in blind on the lower, titled gilt on the spine, small stains in the margins of the plates, otherwise the contents are clean, a slip tipped in opposite the Contents page states 'The portrait of the Author which is mentioned in the Preface has been cancelled and another Frontispiece substituted', a very good copy.   

Mendelssohn (Sidney) South African Bibliography volume I, page 678, 'Mr. Hamilton lived with the natives for many months. He entered into their pursuits, and threw off all European dress. ..."He arrived at Durban in January 1846, and securing a wagon, trekked to Pietermaritzburg, he gives a very animated and vivid description of the lives of the natives of Natal, and of the Dutch and English settlers at this period. An interesting narrative is given of the author's journey through Natal to the Orange Free State...A short trip was made to Basutoland, and the author gives some particulars of his visit to Moshesh.'
