New Zealand Premier Richard Seddon offered to send troops to South Africa in September 1899. This pamphlet is a photographic record of the hasty preparatory training and departure of the First Contingent under the command of Major Alfred Robin, whose portrait is the first photographic illustration in this pamphlet.
Volunteers were selected for training at Campbell's farm in Karori near Wellington. The First Contingent comprised 204 men, divided into two companies. Nine officers, a surgeon and a veterinary surgeon accompanied the men.
So hasty was their training and preparation that they left for South Africa after only three weeks. This pamphlet was published before the contingent reached South Africa.
Several individuals are credited for taking the photographs, such as Morris, Mr W.D. McKellar, J.J. Lewis, Chisholm, Herrmann, Brown and Hughes.
