Caldwell, 7 plates, folding map, original red cloth with gilt vignette of author with two lion cubs on the upper cover and titled gilt on the cover and on the spine, starting to fray at the top and the bottom of the spine and on the bottom edges of the covers, and also at the front hinge, uncut edges, top edge gilt, booksellers ticket on the back paste-down end paper, contents bright, a very good copy.

The inscription on the front free end paper reads: With the authors' best wishes for the New Year 1899

Czech (Dr. Kenneth) An Annotated Bibliography of African Big Game Hunting Books 1785 – 1999, page 216: An excellent sporting title, this features all manner of big game hunting in the regions southwest of Hargeisa on Peel’s first expedition, then through the Haud and Ogaden on his second. The author’s hunting party bagged gazelle, rhinoceros, hartebeest, lion, oryx, and lesser kudu, as well as experiencing some hair-raising encounters with leopards. The rhino Peel bagged was hit eleven times and severely injured a gunbearer before finally succumbing.
