Varian was an engineer, explorer and big game hunter. He pioneered many railroad projects throughout Africa. He was able to hunt elephant and other game during idle times. The giant sable antelope and Angolan dik-dik are named after Varian. Varian was involved throughout his lifetime with the pioneer railroads and under the influence of Cecil Rhodes. He eventually was chief engineer for the Benguela Railroad.
