Some Renowned Rhodesian Senior Schools 1892-1979: Contributed Editorial - Edited by I.P.MacLaren. With an Introduction by I.H.Grant and supplementary features by G.H.Tanser, A.H. Siemers, W.D.Gale and R.J.Challiss.

Hardback with dustcover over dark green rexine boards with gilt blocking to front board, and gilt lettering to spine.

This book records the history of twenty-three of Rhodesia's older high schools,

Allan Wilson School, Arundel School, Chaplin School, Chisipite Senior School, Churchill School, Dominican Convent High School, Bulawayo. Dominican Convent High School, Salisbury, Eveline High School, Falcon College, Founders High School, Gifford High School, Girls' High School, Salisbury, Guinea Fowl School, Milton High School, Peterhouse, Plumtree School, Prince Edward School, Queen Elizabeth School, St.George's  College, St. Peter's Diocesan School, Umtali High School, Umtali Boys' High School, Umtali Girls' High School.

The education system which today we take so much for granted developed from the most modest and primitive beginnings- all that the early settlers could then afford. It was at that time specifically designed to cater to the requirements of the families of a small and widely scattered settler population.

In the struggle to establish a modern state. the Roman Catholic Church took the lead in providing some rudimentary schooling, but the desire for undenominational institutions led eventually to the establishment of a small number of grant-aided schools provided by the Administration under what came to be known as the Educational Ordinance (Ordinance No 18 of 1899).

The staff who were recruited to operate the system were all strongly conditioned by the traditions and ideals of the English Public Schools, hardly surprising in an age when Victorian athleticism was so firmly entrenched in the majority of Public Schools of the better sort.

Book contains illustrated histories contributed by the schools themselves. The extensive tables include the names of 311 scholars who lost their lives in the conflict of 1958-1979.

Half-Title, Title, Contents, List of Illustrations, List of Tables, Photo Credits,  Publishers' Introduction. xvi plus 346 pages text with numerous illustrations.
