Currie reviews the current state of affairs in South Africa, surveys the state of the economy and its potential for mining and agriculture, and forsees a union between the Transvaal, the Free State, the Cape and Natal. By1888 Currie had firmly established his shipping company, the Castle Packet Company, as the leader on the South African run (it was to merge with the Union Line in 1900). He had numerous other business interests in South Africa and in 1888 had become one of the original directors of De Beers.
