How it works

Register

Two volumes; vii plus 352pp, vii plus 352pp plus 32pp book catalogue. Sympathetically rebound using spices of the original Red cloth with original gilt titles to spines. Loose inserted map (large) in rear pocket of Volume 1.

Some marking and scuffing to cover boards, minimal edgewear. Sympathetically rebound using splices of the original cloth wherever possible. Corners are neatly reinforced with near matching cloth. New EPs. Prev owners names untidily penned to page 1 of Volume 1. Also rubber stamped name to title page. Light foxing to fore and aft sections of both volumes, else contents are clean and tight.

In 1877 Trollope set off on this his last and by all accounts his least enjoyable foreign tour, just as Britain was annexing the Transvaal (which would lead to the First Boer War in a few years). As with NORTH AMERICA and with AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND, he arranged ahead of time for a book of his observations to be published (soon after he returned -- as he wrote while he traveled). Chapman & Hall had arranged for him to use a cumbersome mechanical device called a \"multiplying writer\" while on trek (so as to produce more than one copy simultaneously), but Trollope jettisoned it early in his travels, as his baggage was everywhere charged by weight.

This is one of Trollope\'s scarcest books.
