580pp. Quarter leather over marbled boards. Gilt to spine simply titled 'South African Tribes'. Two parts in one volume. Contains a seperate hand-written note addressed and presenting the book to Major Jardine, one of the first collectors of Africana in South Africa. Ex Libris (William Jardine - dated 1903) paste-down to front fixed EP.
Boards are edge-worn and scuffed. Light scattered foxing throughout. The top edge of the title page, 15mm, has been lopped but this does not interfere with the text. Otherwise a good copy of an extremely scarce title.
A voluminous but valuable compilation based on Moodie's Records and the works of many of the early writers on South African matters.[Mendelssohn's South African Bibliography].
This particular book is unique in that it was presented, with an accompanying note, to Major William Jardine (02/12/1865 - 26/02/1948), a pioneer Africana book collector of his day. Maj.Jardine was often consulted with by Sir Ernest Oppenheimer on matters concerning collectable Africana and the construction of the Brenthurst Library. They became personal friends.
