Set of 100 stereoscopic cards (180 x 90 mm) with views covering many aspects of the Anglo-Boer War. Contained in box covered in navy cloth, resembling 2 volumes of a book, spines gilt and marked volumes 1 and 2 of the Underwood Travel Library

Each card is captioned on the front in English and on the back in English, French, German, Spanish, Swedish and Russian. Several of these also have full descriptions on the back in English.

All cards bear the marking Underwood and Underwood Publishers on the front left hand side, and on the right Works and Studio Arlington NJ and Westwood NJ. They are also stamped Sun Sculpture Trademark. The cards are in very good condition.

War correspondents and news photographers descended upon South Africa at the start of the Anglo-Boer war, among them the photographers of Underwood & Underwood. These photographers were not news photographers after sensational, gory war images, nor were they part of any pro-British or anti-Boer propaganda campaign. They stayed away from conflict zones but still captured other military related activity with their primary market, namely the American middle class in mind. Underwood and Underwood produced sets of images in boxes made to look like a single, or a pair of books entitled: “The South African War through the Stereoscope”. These boxes were then filled with Anglo-Boer war stereo photographs pasted onto curved cardboard. More titles were added as the war progressed.
