It is the publisher's hope this book will be useful not only to Ceylon collectors but also to postal historians who are interested in the development of the Isalnd's Mail, internal and overseas, during ther second half of the 19th century. Certainly it was the Author's aim to save fellow aficionados the time and effort he spent on locating and researching copious amounts of raw data to compile and write the book which now joins the few published volumes on Ceylon.
It contains in chronological order extracts from Postal Ordinances, Postal Notices in the weekly Ceyon Government Gazettes, Almanacs, Directories, and Government Blue Books. Much of the data has not been otherwise published. This fundamental work explains, withour drawing conclusions which are best left to future researchers, certain postal/historical matters which could only be assumed in the past. Hopefully it will help collectors to better understand the router and rates, and encourage further work on the subject.
The illustrations have been taken from the Author's Ceylon collection which is being offered for sale in its entirety by Spink & Son, London in Autumn 1999
