Bowker's letters and papers depict the romance of life on the North Eastern frontier of the Cape Colony in the 1830s and 1840s. An account of a time before the worst frontier wars when the African population was relatively free from outside interference. A positive description of shared suffering of British and Dutch colonists and their co-operation. Africana Collectiana Vol. 1. One of a limited edition of 500 copies. Five pages of the new edition. The original edition of 1864 has pp 1-275 plus a 6-page index. All early volumes in the Africana Collectiana series were issued without dust jackets. Brown skivertex-covered boards with pressed design and gilt logo on the front and gilt titles on spine. Some darkening of the outer edges of the pages, otherwise in Very Good condition.
