Bowker's letters and papers depict the romance of life on the North Eastern frontier of the Cape Colony in the 1830s and 1840s. An account of a time before the worst frontier wars when the African population was relatively free from outside interference. A positive description of shared suffering of British and Dutch colonists and their co-operation.
