Published to mark two hundred years since the first land grants were made along the shoreline in the lee of the mountain between Muizenberg and Kalk Bay on the False Bay coast. Early fishermen from the Philippines settled in Kalk Bay and named their church after the patron saint of Spain, St James. The hamlet grew to include hotels, boarding-houses, homes, schools, a whaling station and a marine research station. The arrival of the railway line in 1883 made it possible to live at the seaside and to work "up the line".
