The detailed diaries of the naturalist and officer of the second half of Stanley's expedition across Africa to rescue the unwilling Emin Pasha in Equatoria. The author did not complete this last of the great transcontinental treks, and died of fever a thousand miles up the Congo river. He and Barttelot were to bear the brunt of the blame that Stanley apportioned for the failure of the expedition to progress.
