This copy is from the collection of PROFESSOR GABRIËL STEPHANUS NIENABER and has his initials gilt-lettered at the tail of the spine. His signature appears on the first blank, and his pencilled annotations appear throughout. Spine rubbed, tape-marks on the free endpapers, scattered foxing throughout. Fair to good.

Prof Nienaber, distinguished academic and Afrikaans-language linguist was born in Fauresmith district, Orange Free State, 1903. He was an amateur bookbinder and it is likely that he bound this volume himself. Dr Stephanus Johannes du Toit (1891–1972) was chief inspector of education in the Free State and an Afrikaans poet and writer of note. As a very small boy during the South African War (1899–1902) he accompanied his father on commando. At the age of 12 he attended school for the first time. He obtained a BA-degree from Grey University College in 1913 and later an MA in Dutch and English. He went to Amsterdam in 1920 and obtained his doctor’s degree cum laude in Dutch language and literature in 1924 with the study here offered for sale. He married on his return to South Africa and one of his daughters became the poet Elizabeth C.M. du Toit. In 1970, the South African Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns bestowed honorary membership on him.
