Wonderful 7pp. American Civil War autograph letter from Union Sailor Robert Weir Junior to his wife Daisy written "On the Old Ship Off Mobile Bay" [USS Richmond), dated June 9th. 1864. My research confirms the identity of the writer. Robert Weir Jr. (1836 – 1905) was the son of Robert W. Weir, a professional artist of note. The son was also an artist and as Assistant Engineer on the USS Richmond, did drawings of the War which were regularly submitted to and published in Harper’s Weekly. In this letter he discusses various matters (leading up to the Battle of Mobile Bay) and in particular mentions showing “his machines” to the Admiral (Farragut) on the USS Hartford and referring to “my Catarmaran” which he hopes might be used in blowing up the CSS Tennessee – “he is delighted with my machines, one of which I brought with me...I have become acquainted with several more Captains...they have carefully examined my catamaran as I call it...I shall think so when one of them has blown up the 'Tennessee'...if no attack is made here...I shall send in my resignation...I don't think any demonstration will be made upon Mobile for some weeks to come...We may make some attempt to destroy the Ram Tenn...They are clearing the Navy now of worthless 2nd and 3rd...the traitor Buchanan...threatens to come out and open the Blockade...". I have traced an archive of 30 other letters to his wife which resides in the Pearce Museum in Navarro, Texas. I have also traced an archive of Weir manuscript material in Mystic Seaport, USA – The Museum of America and the Sea. Altogether a most interesting and important letter written at a critical stage of the Civil War. The letter is written in a very neat and easily legible script and is in fine condition for a document 150 years old.
