From the foreword: It is with profound sorrow that we record the death of the senior author, Dr Robert Broom, on 6 April 1951, very shortly after the completion of this work. To those who were closely associated with him, it was obvious that only by sheer strength of will was he able to overcome the handicap of rapidly failing health and keep going to the last in order to finish this, his last important contribution to the Ancestry of Man. By his death South Africa in particular and the world in general has lost an outstanding figure in the fields of Palaeontology and Physical Anthropology. During the past five years Dr. Broom worked in close collaboration with the junior author J.T. Robinson, who has contributed to this book those chapters describing the permanent dentition and dental affinities of P. Crassidens and Telanthropus.
