Bishop Colenso wasted no time after his consecration in 1853 to make plans for an extended tour through Natal. He landed at Port Natal, made his way to Pietermaritzburg and then on to a number of smaller towns. He also visited various kraals of Zulu chiefs, among whom Langalibalele, Pakade and Putine. Colenso was deeply interested in the Zulus, their customs and tribal life, and he did not hide his aversion of enforcing monogamy on families which would result in the separation of wives and husbands. This stance would later lead to his removal from office.
