Royal Collection Trust (https://www.rct.uk/collection/1079822/ten-years-captivity-in-the-mahdis-camp-1882-1892-from-the-original-manuscripts-of), Joseph Ohrwalder (d.1913) was an Austrian Catholic priest working in the Sudan when in 1882, members of the Mahdiyya forces took him and two nuns captive. He wrote this memoir over the next ten years before they eventually escaped with the assistance of the British officer Francis Reginald Wingate. Wingate published these translations of Ohrwalder’s diary in 1892 as part of a propaganda campaign to increase British public support for further military action in the region.
