Cracking to rear spinal hinge of volume 1. Spine-ends of Vol 1 are frayed. Lighter cracking to the spine-ends of Vol 2. Gilt title to spine of Volume 2 is scuffed. Silver vignette on front cover is heavily scuffed on both volumes. Corners are bumped. EP hinges are cracked but holding. Prev. owner's name is penned in fountain-ink to 1st blank prelim of both volumes. Frontispiece tissue-guards and facing title pages of both volumes are foxed. Only light occasional foxing to the margins of some of the text pages, mostly clean. Internal bindings are shaken between certain sections, more so in Volume 2 than Volume 1.Light cracking here and there, mostly to the outer margins of some of the map folds.
Casati (1838-1902) was an Italian explorer who arrived in Africa in 1880 and was the first European to see the Ruwenzori Mts. He was with Emin Pasha when Stanley arrived in 1888. His account, translated from the Italian, of the expedition and Stanley's role with observations on the country.
