The author spent ten years in South Africa, from 1819, farming, travelling, trading and big game hunting. He spent some time in the western Cape among the farmers and Hottentots and then some time among the new settlers in Grahamstown and the eastern Cape. There are detailed descriptions of the Hottentots and Xhosa as well as hunting most types of antelope, elephant, buffalo, lion and leopard. There are two lithographic plates illustrating hunting scenes. MENDELSSOHN, 2/50-51; SABIB, 3/367. Two volumes. Rebound recent brown half-leather, cloth sides, new end-papers. Pp. xii,347 + viii,352, 2 frontispieces. Cloth sides slightly rubbed, some foxing, particularly on plates.
