2 volumes: 477 + 459 pages, 9 coloured maps, 82 black and white illustrations, blue cloth titled in black on upper cover with gilt pictorial design, spine gilt and black, with gilt vignette at the bottom, top edges and fore-edges uncut, many unopened pages, pages 305 – 312 are torn at the top, foxing on preliminary and end pages, front hinge of volume 1 split but holding firmly, boards lightly insect scarred, a good copy.
