This book, devised and written by a team of acknowledged authorities on the history of English speaking South Africa, recounts the sometimes dramatic history of this large group of settlers.
Chapters are of two kinds, attempting rather different things : first, those which aim to keep the reader aware of the large social and historical context of which the 1820 Settlement is part: second. accounts of the struggles of the Settlers themselves, viewed at close quarters, and using their own words where possible.
The value of the text is greatly enhanced by nearly 350 illustrations, many of which have not been published before. These have been chosen from contemporary sources, or from photographs of relics or buildings which have survived. The captions do more than describe the pictures, they provide important information not in the text itself.
