How it works

Volume I: Africana Collectanea XIV; Volume II: Africana Collectanea XV.

Grey paper dust jacket with white and red lettering and a brief synopsis of the book on the back of the dust jacket. Some small tears and scuffs of spine and dust jacket edges. Both volumes covered with blue rexine, blind stamped, gilt design on front, gilt titles on spine.

Vol. I Pages ii-xiv 1-732. Eight new prelim pages plus index, 735-754.

Vol. II Pages ii-xv 1-484. Six new prelim pages plus index, 487-497.

These two volumes record the history of Natal from the time of Vasco da Gama in 1495 to the establishment of colonial authority in 1845. Bird collected a vast number of sources to record this history. He was himself employed by the government for forty years, so he was in touch with events and important people. Theal writes: "I know of no document of importance that is not included. A work of permanent value for historical purposes."
