These two volumes record the history of Natal from the time of Vasco da Gama in 1495 to the establishment of colonial authority in 1845. Bird collected a vast number of sources to record this history. He was himself employed by the government for forty years, so he was in touch with events and important people. Theal writes: "I know of no document of importance that is not included. A work of permanent value for historical purposes."
