The author, a leading geologist of the mid-nineteenth century, and a firm friend of Charles Darwin, nonetheless found it difficult to ascribe evolution and natural selection with his religious beliefs. Nonetheless the book gives a good overview of Victorian beliefs prevalent some few years after the publication of Darwin's work. 551 pp with numerous text engravings and 4 sketch maps. Very good, condition in original cloth-covered blind-stamped boards, but book has been rebacked with original spine laid down. Ownership in prelims and a few relevant pencil marginalia.
