From the editorial note: 'The writer, early in October, 1897, invited several gentlemen to lunch at the City Club, Cape Town, and there detailed to them a plan for visiting Bulawayo on the date of the opening on the Northern Extension Railway to that point, 1400 miles distant. The plan met with so much favor (sic) that we were instructed to go ahead with it. Mr Arderne and the writer were appointed to visit the General Manager of the Railways to arrange for a private car, Mr Cartwright agreeing to arrange for the commissariat.'

Members of the party included Mr & Mrs H.M. Arderne, Mr & Mrs J.D. Cartwright, Mr & Mrs George Twycross and Mr, Polhemus Lyon.

A South African Bibliography volume 1, page 187: 'Party had been to Bulawayo in 1897 from Cape Town for the opening of the Northern Railway and now again on the first through passenger train to the Victoria Falls'.
