A "beautiful volume by Walter Battiss...the best general view of the subject" (The South African Archaeological Bulletin, 1949).
Battiss was an amateur enthusiast of Bushman rock art, an interest he developed before became an artist in the 1930s. In 1917, when Battiss was 11, the family had moved to Koffiefontein where an engineer on a local mine stimulated an interest in archaeology in the young Battiss leading to expeditions in search of ancient art.
From the 1940s until his death in 1982, Battiss returned to the inspiration of San rock art which had left a lasting impression on his style.
