No dust jacket. Sticker of original bookseller (Mudies Select Library, London) on the front cover of both volumes. One whole, one shows signs of an attempt at removal. Neat signature of previous owner, Reginald Carwithen on half title page of each volume. Dark red cloth-covered boards, gilt design on front and gilt titles on spine. Black endpapers. Some spotting and wear on front cover, top and lower spine edges.

Illustrations, portraits and map. Frontispiece of Volume One shows a young Sir Harry Smith and of Volume Two an elderly Sir Harry and a facsimile of his signature.

Sir Harry Smith was a military leader and governor of the Cape Colony and played a vital role in the Frontier Wars of the 19th Century. He was involved in military action in America and India and also fought at the Battle of Waterloo. Several towns in South Africa have been named after him or his wife: Harrismith, Ladysmith etc.
