First edition, First impression: 463 pages, colour frontispiece, 56 colour plates, diagrams, blue cloth, spine gilt and with the measurement ruler in gilt on the back cover, dust jacket worn and with signs of previous cellotape repairs, now preserved in a protector, spotting on the top and fore-edges.

The scarce first impression of the standard work on South African birds. The first impression was published on 8th June 1940 and the second impression on 17th December of the same year.
