Kessler found that while Boer victims of the British concentration camps had, rightly, never been forgotten, the thousands of black victims had slid into complete anonymity. Past work on the black concentration camps in South Africa accepted that 13 000 to 14 000 black South Africans died in concentration camps. After a decade and a half of intensive research in the archives, Stowell Kessler has established that at very least 21 000 black people died in 65 black concentration camps between 1900 and 1903.
