Vrijstatia Series, No.9; "In May 1852 the 20 year-old Irishman William Jones St.John was stationed in Bloenfontein as lieutenant in the Royal Artillery. Twenty months later he died here of dysentery, but in the single volume of his diary which has survived, he has left a vivid picture of life in this small and isolated garrison town during the final months of British occupation, ... the Basutho Campaign, culminating in the battle of Berea... and a trip to the Drakensberg," [front flap]. Book condition: near fine, jacket has some wear to edges, and rubbing. Jacket now protected by a Brodart plastic sleeve.
