First edition: 4 volumes, 220 +194 + 245 + 242 pages., 100 hand coloured lithographic plates, numerous woodcuts, uncut edges, original brown cloth boards with gilt vignettes of an antelope on the upper cover, titled gilt on the spine- the boards are worn and insect scarred, corners bumped,the plates are bright free of foxing, hinges of volume III weak, a good set.
Volumes 1 – 3 have temporary title pages bound in the front of each volume – vols. 1 and 2 with a small piece cut out of the top of the temporary title page.Vol 3 has a few of the original individual issues bound in at the back.
Volume 4 has the correct title page in the front of the volume. The correct title pages of the first three volumes and the index to illustrations for each of these volumes are bound in at the back of this volume.
Printed on the temporary title page in volume one: Illustrated with hand coloured plates, the greater number of them drawn (under the immediate supervision of the late Sir Victor Brooke Bart.) by Joseph Wolf and by numerous wood cuts.
