xix, 291 pages, 8 pages advertisements, photographic frontispiece and 12 photographic plates with further sketches in the text, dedication to Theodore Roosevelt followed by a letter of appreciation from him in which he thanks Sir Alfred for his first introduction to lion hunting. Bound in blue cloth with title embossed on upper cover and gilt titling on the spine. Cloth lightly insect scarred and back top corner bent, endpapers browned with slight foxing to preliminary pages but body of book is unblemished. 

Usually found in red cloth with gilt titling and decoration on the upper cover and spine this appears to be a variant binding of the first edition. There was a second edition in 1914. 

Czech: An annotated Bibliography of African Big Game hunting Books, 1785 to 1950, page 127, ‘Both a scientific and sporting examination of the lion, this title offers natural history and hunting of the big cat the length and breadth of Africa. Pease offers his own hunting experiences as well as those of other famous sportsmen of the era with an interesting chapter on the history of lion hunting. There is also a chapter on lions in the Sudan by A.L. Butler.’
