Published by John Murray, London, 1913. 1st Edition. Original red cloth with gilt titles and gilt lion to front boar and spine. A very good copy. Internally fine with numerous black and white plates. A list of names for the Lion in Africa at rear of book. Scarce.

Sir Alfred Edward Peasesecond Baronet of Hutton Lowcross and Pinchinthorpe, the son of Sir Joseph Whitall Pease, a prominent Quaker director of mercantile enterprise and the first Quaker baronet. Pease was a British Liberal Party politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1885 and 1902 and who became a pioneer settler of British East Africa, now Kenya..

Dear Sir Alfred,—I am very much pleased that you are to write a book about lion-hunting. Very, very few people have an experience which better justifies such a book. It is the king of all sports when carried on as you have carried it on, especially when you gallop the lion, and then kill him on foot as he charges or prepares to charge as a lion thus rounded up will generally do. I am peculiarly pleased to have you write the book, for it was under your guidance that I first tried lion-hunting.

Sincerely yours,

Theodore Roosevelt.
