Staining and fading on cloth covered boards. Old book plate stain on upper pastedown endpaper, 2 cm. tear in lower margin of title page. Some foxing almost throughout. This first edition contains all the illustrations: two of those of Magwamba girls were suppressed and left out of the second and subsequent editions. This first edition of 1936 was limited to 1000 copies. Text in good condition. All illustrations present, but grubby marks in some margins.
