viii + 408 pages, original pebble-grained cloth, titled gilt on the spine, with the binder’s ticket of Saul Solomon, 40 St. George’s Street, Cape Town, at the bottom of the front paste-down endpaper, front hinge cracked but holding firmly on the ties.

Presentation inscription on the second free endpaper, ‘With compliments from Sir Thos, Maclear’ and the pencil signature of Sir John Herschel at the top of the page. Stamp of the Herschel Library, Collingwood on the title page.
