68 Editions in two bound volumes.
The Cape Times Weekly Edition, delivered to country towns, added a section to their newspaper called The War Day by Day, after war was declared in October 1899. Each 16-page weekly Cape Times was illustrated by two pages of photographs. In the first edition, No. 721 of Wed. Oct. 18, 1899, the photographs were of the first Boer War of 1881. The rest of the photographs are of the war in progress. A young man working at the Worcester Standard Newspaper as a printer at the time made a collection of these editions from No. 271 Wed. Oct. 18, 1899 until No. 791, Wed Feb 27 1901, shortly after Martial Law was enforced in Worcester (Jan. 1901).
He bound them into two large books with thick board covers. Small tears in spine binding at base.
The newspapers have browned and some pages are brittle on edges. The first few pp are worst affected. Page 7 torn at one corner and some text missing. The only lost text throughout. Many small edge tears, some sellotaped about 50 years ago, still a bit sticky. Photograph pages mostly undamaged, some sellotape, but photos clear and clean.
68 Editions, No. 721-791. No's 722, 731 and 765 missing. Some numbers repeat - newspaper error, and some are missing, although the dates are consecutive. About 10 photo pp have been bound in the wrong places, but their correct date is printed on the page. 71 pages of photographs, with b&w photos on both sides of each page, about 4 to 6 pictures on each page. 90% are of the war as it progresses, interspersed with pictures of local sports teams or ladies doing good works etc. Two very large books, together weighing approx. 7 kg. They can be packaged for posting, but courier transport advised if outside easy reach of Cape Town. Free delivery within the CT area. 11-page detailed description of each edition available and can be emailed on request.
