And other later phases of the Boer War as seen by an American correspondent.
203 pages, frontispiece portrait, folding map, maroon cloth gilt, a very good copy.
The first great De Wet hunt (July-August 1900) is described, in which the elusive guerrilla commander, with a very large and cumbersome wagon convoy (p. 175) 'marched 250 miles across country, from the Basutoland border, across the Vaal, and nearly to Pretoria. With two of the keenest of the British generals on his heels throughout the march, and with Lord Kitchener himself directing the last part of the chase, he kept his lead until he was weary, and held his pursuers at bay for two weeks while he rested in the hills along the Vaal; successfully threaded his way among several large bodies of troops on the lookout for him, crossed Lord Roberts's lines of communication twice, cutting them in both cases, captured two train-loads of soldiers and supplies, and finally joined Delarey in the Transvaal 250 miles from his starting point'.
