This lot comprises the following two Dickens first editions:
1. The Chimes. A Goblin Story.1845.Chapman & Hall. First Edition, with the second state engraved title page with the publisher's name below the vignette. 175 pages of text illustrated with a frontispiece, engraved title page and eleven engravings in the text by Maclise, Doyle, Stanfield and Leech. In the original gilt embossed cloth which has slight wear at the joints and extremes of the spine. Both inner hinges are starting but firm. An about very good copy.
2. The Cricket and the Hearth. 1846. Bradbury & Evans. 174 pages of text with engraved frontispiece, title page and engravings by the same artists as the above volume. The advert leaf at the end is in the second state where Oliver Twist is recorded as 'New Edition'. In the original gilt embossed cloth with the gilt decoration on the front board bright. Rear joint cracked but firm and inner hinges intact.
This is a matching pair with both volumes being clean and unfoxed, with a matching ownership signature on the front pastedowns and in about very good condition.
