Volume 3, Number 4 of The Classic, edited now by Barney Simon. This issue contains 8 early full page glossy photographs by David Goldblatt preceding his first book, On The Mines, by two years. The cover illustration is of Athol Fugard for his 17pp. contribution, Athol Fugard Notebooks. His article is preceded by the statement that: "Most of following extracts form the text of a book of photographs by David Goldblatt". Fugard is acknowledged in Goldblatt's book "Some Afrikaners Photographed" which appeared in 1975, but none of these writings of Fugard appear in the book! Fugard's book "Notebooks" (a signed copy of which is offered on this auction) was only published in 1983, and most of the contents of this issue of Classic do not appear in the book. Those that do have substantial textual changes. Hence this is an issue of bibliographical significance to the Fugard scholar as well.
