A very good set of the first edition.

Stanely went to the Congo in 1879 to investigate the possibilities of development of the region. He secured for the Belgian Association Internationale large tracts of land about the Congo River. He established and entered into treaties with the local rulers. He laid the foundation of an administrative system in what became the Congo State. Stanley was known locally as the "breaker of rocks," a title given by the Vivi chiefs.
