Harper & Brothers, 1885. 2 Volumes. First American edition. xxvii, 528; x, 483pp. with 12 pages of ads at rear. Original green cloth stamped in gilt, white, red, black, and white. Near Fine set with both large maps in rear pockets, all illustrations and other fold-out maps, bright gilt, internally clean and bright. Light rubbing to edges, tiny scuff to spine on Vol ii, a bit of browning to edges. Internally fine with remains of library bookplate on the front pastedowns. No other markings etc.  An excellent set of the Victorian-era adventurer's lavishly illustrated African travelogue and history (including his famous rescue of Dr. Livingston), scarce in such nice condition.

A detailed account of Stanley's expedition on the Congo River from 1879 - 1884 and his work to establish the "Congo Free State" on behalf of King Leopold II of Belgium.
