After the days of Vasco da Gama when the country was "made red with the bood of Portugal," most of the settlers in Natal for a period of three hundred years were survivors of shipwrecks: and their sufferings and adventures are graphically described.
In 1824 came the first real settlement, and thereafter the history is largely one of wars and massacres and heroic struggles, for eighteen vital years, until Natal, under a British Governor was annexed to the Cape.
Over the last ten years, booksellers in Natal have had many enquiries for this fine book on Natal's early history, which jas encouraged the publishers to produce this faithful facsimile edition numbered 150 of 1000 copies. The book contains all the original illustrations. Hardback with unclipped dustcover(chips)- Frontispiece- xii plus 348 pages text. Very clean copy.
