xii plus 348pp. Original cloth hardcover with gilt title to spine. New edition with illustrations.
Slight bumping to corners. Name penned to front EP. Some scattered foxing to prelims and edge of text block. Otherwise a very attractive copy.
After the days of Vasco da Gama when the country was "made red with the blood of Portugal" most of the settlers in Natal for a period of three hundred years were survivors of shipwrecks: and their sufferings and adventures are here graphically described. In 1824 cane the first real settlement, and thereafter the history is largely one of the wars and massacres and heroic struggles, for eighteen vital years, until Natal under a British Governor was annexed to the Cape.
