Adam Tas, born in Amsterdam in 1668, came to the Cape in 1697 as a free burgher and lived with his wealthy relation, Henning Husing. Thus he was at the centre of the complaints after Husing had made representations to the Directors about van der Stel's misrule.
The diary was written in Dutch, but this book has an English translation on each facing page. The English translation was done by A.C. Paterson.
There is an introduction, the Diary itself, and Appendix with 6 chapters on the complaints against W.A. van der Stel.
