A statement of the case of the Boers against the British up to the time of the first annexation and the London Convention. "The internal politics of the Republics are not mentioned, but special attention has been given to the relations of the Boers with the natives, when these brought the Boers into contact with Great Britain." Dr. Leyds is very bitter against Sir Percy Fitzpatrick, and constantly declaims against his work, "The Transvaal from Within", which he avers is "an account of things as they were not," and he remarks that "Mr. Chamberlain... rewarded Fitzpatrick for his indictment of the Boers.......by conferring upon him what is sometimes described as the honour of knighthood."

The work is of some  importance, owing to the care with which the case for the Boers has been got up by their former Secretary of State; but in order to gauge its real value and credibility it is not only necessary to verify the facts, as Dr. Leyds invites any " sceptical reader " to do, but it is advisable to compare the statements quoted with those of other authors, writing on the same subjects, whose view of the questions may be somewhat different to those of the authorities brought forward by D. Leyds.
