41 volumes, 1640 colour plates (in volumes 1-26, numbers 1-1040, the plates are hand coloured, after that they are photolithographically printed), green cloth, titled gilt on spines, paperback index covers volumes 1 – 36. This index is also published in Afrikaans.

Volume one has a handwritten note pasted on a front free end paper by R.A Dyer, Editor “Some years ago a fire destroyed all the unsold stock of volume 1, Part 1, of this work. In order to make it possible to meet recent orders for complete sets of Flowering Plants of South Africa a limited number of copies of Part One have been reproduced by the photostat method. This is one of them.” Dated Pretoria, 1 January 1945.

'Since its inception in 1921, this serial, modelled on the former Curtis's Botanical Magazine, has published well over 2000 colour plates of African plants prepared by some 80 artists. The object of the serial is to convey to the reader the beauty and variety of form of the African flora, to stimulate interest in the study, conservation and cultivation of African plants and to advance the science of botany as well as botanical art.'
