This is an important study, comparing two societies, both established as a direct result of capitalist expansion in lands full of natural beauty and resources and yet the outcomes were so different. In one case, local inhabitants were almost completely pushed out; in the other, local societies adapted and changed to accommodate the new arrivals. North America became open and inclusive, whereas colonial rule in southern Africa became exclusive and inward looking. A seldom seen attempt to explain and understand both societies.
